Limit checkbox selections in Google Forms
There are two different limits people want on checkboxes. One is built into Google Forms. The other isn’t.
Limit how many boxes one person can tick (built in)
Google Forms can already do this, with no script:
- Click the checkbox question.
- Open the ⋮ menu at the bottom right of the question and choose Response validation.
- Pick Select at most, Select at least or Select exactly, enter a number, and add an error message.
For example, “Select at most 2” stops anyone choosing more than two workshops.
Limit how many people can tick each box (needs a script)
Response validation only looks at one person’s answer. It can’t say “Workshop A has 20 seats in total”. That’s a per-option capacity across all respondents, and Google Forms has no setting for it.
Form Choice Limiter adds it. After every submission it counts how many people ticked each box and removes any box that has reached its limit. The full script supports checkbox questions:
limits: {
'Which workshops will you attend?': {
'Workshop A': 20,
'Workshop B': 20,
'Workshop C': 12
}
}Use both together
The two work well side by side: response validation stops one person taking three workshops, and the per-option limits stop any workshop going over capacity.
Only need multiple choice?
If each person picks one option, a multiple-choice question is simpler, and the free generator covers it.
